Flex fuel is a term that describes vehicles that run using different types of fuels or a mixture of fuels. Usually, there are two types of fuel used in the automobile industry today. These are ethanol and gasoline. It used to be gasoline. But the growing concerns on its rapid depletion and environmental concerns have prompted governments to find out alternative fuels, one of which is ethanol. Hydrogen is another alternative, yet there are few vehicles with engines capable of supporting hydrogen fuel.

To be technically correct, a vehicle can only be considered flex-fuel automobile if its engine is so modified as to accept a blend of ethanol and gasoline. Also it must be able to shift from a pure gasoline fuel to a pure ethanol fuel or from pure ethanol to pure gasoline.

Countries began to show interest in creating or procuring other kinds of fuel because of the impending depletion of oil reserves due to heavy consumption. To curb rapid petroleum consumption, other alternatives had to be explored. It turned out that a fuel that comes from sugar cane seemed (and still seems) a feasible option. With this discovery, the dependence on gas has lowered. And recently, more car manufacturers have developed vehicle engines that could use up both gas and ethanol.

Flex fuel is actually a shortened form of flexible-fuel. When a car model is described as flex fuel, it means it is capable of running on a combination of ethanol and gas. In this mix, ethanol has the higher percentage. Some vehicles actually run with 85% ethanol, others 75%. In any case, the reliance and demand on gas and petroleum is lowered.
